O.K., so I watched Sixty Minutes and Oprah graced us with her presence and had some experts on with powerful insight I thought. Since I am chairman of a committee that is working on building communication with our students and parents in crisis, I found it useful information.
The main conclusion that I have drawn from this was that working with students that have been exposed to severe trauma instead of asking What can I do to help?- ask what happened to you?”. And then you listen, and you care. It makes sense. The sooner that that student has someone on their side, they can begin to heal. ( Note the trauma has stopped in order for this to happen)
In her book “Enticing Hard-to-Reach Writers,” Ruth Ayres (https://ruthayreswrites.com/my-books/) shares her personal journey with her own children–adopted from hard places. As a teacher and mother, Ruth gave me a different lens to view these students, one that helps me see ways to understand them, connect with them.
