I remember going to Howard Johnson’s restaurant when I was a child. My grandparents would take me to one when we were visiting them in Massachusetts. There was something magical to me about the place. The color, design, midcentury modern style made my heart beat faster.
Recently, when binge-watching Mad Men on Netflix, the characters stopped at a Howard Johnson’s restaurant. Memories flooded my mind and I longed for a visit.
I wonder if there is an old-school Howard Johnson’s left. If there is, I foresee a road trip in my future!
Mighty Moe’s and brain freeze from orange slushes! (Or was that Hot Shoppes?)
I enjoyed your reminiscence. Fun how the TV released the memory and longing.

Oh, I remember Howard Johnson! We drove between Indiana and New Jersey every summer to visit relatives which included the length of the PA turnpike and there were bound to be a couple pit stops at HJ. Loved their 28 flavors of ice cream although we didn’t get it often. My HS senior summer I worked at one, dipped a lot of ice cream and made fantastic sodas, shakes, and malts.

We stopped at them in 1961 when we did a road trip across the country.
