There is an airport in Austin, Texas that has been retired. For anyone who likes Mid-century architecture, its closure tugs at the heartstrings.
I had the opportunity to visit the location of the former airport and I was thrilled to see the old control tower standing. I fell in love with it. The stores and restaurants that have taken over the land of the old airport have tried to stay in the spirit of the location. A giant grocery store was built to resemble an old airplane hangar. Even with the thoughtful, new construction, I long to have walked through the old airport during its glory. I can only imagine a décor that was right out of the Jetson’s.
